Windows 10 Security Updates After 2025 Cost ($61Year) & Upgrade Options

As of October 14, 2025, Microsoft's widely used Windows 10 operating system will no longer receive critical security updates, which protect against viruses, malware, and other threats. Despite holding a majority market share of over 68% as of November 2023, Windows 10 users can still extend security protection beyond the end-of-support date by enrolling in Microsoft's paid Extended Security Updates (ESU) program.

For $61 per device per year, the ESU program offers critical and important security updates for a maximum of three years after the end of support. The cost doubles annually, starting at $122 in the second year and reaching $244 by 2027. However, it's important to note that ESU only provides security updates, not new features or technical support from Microsoft. The discounted price of $45 per device for the first year is available for purchases covering up to five devices.

ESU licenses will be available for purchase starting October 2024, a year before Windows 10 support ends. Microsoft recommends upgrading to Windows 11 on compatible devices for a more secure and feature-rich experience in the long run, viewing ESU as a temporary solution, not a long-term plan.

It's important to consider factors such as hardware and software compatibility and comfort level with a new operating system when making an informed decision.
